Husband's Letters: Dear Mrs. Loerke, sometimes you wake me up at 3am on my birthday to ask if I want to open presents. Your excitement to celebrate me at all hours of the day is nothing short of admirable. Dear Organic Bloom, each time I walk past our new picture frame I can't help but smell it. The freshly-cut wood scent reminds me of my childhood when Dad would make things in the wood shop. Dear Listening Skills, you are something I still struggle with at times during conflict. Therefore I'm officially dominating you in 2011. Dear Emma, yesterday on our run you told me all about your hopes of competing in this year's MR340 Race. Know that there are few things I find more attractive than watching you dream.

Love,
Husband

The Mr. asks: What's your favorite smell? Coffee? Christmas trees? New Shoes?

HAPPY FREAKIN WEEKEND!

gasoline... i know that's strange, but i can't help it.

Sawdust or newly cut wood always reminds me of my Grandad. He was a carpenter (til he retired) and always smelt of sawdust lol.

My other grandparents house always smelt like a cross between cake and coffee. When my Grandma passed away two years ago I couldn't even go in Costa or SBUX because the smell reminded me of her :(

Other than that my favourite smell is freshly cut grass or when it rains on a summer day (you know when it's like really warm and then you need the rain to bring the temperature down a bit)

I second the fresh cut grass.

The Gap makes a body spray called Grass and it does actually smell like the stuff that grows on your lawn. My beloved smells pretty good when he comes home from his restaurants after cooking all day (although he wouldn't say so).

Brand new books (ones with glossy pages are the best). I would have to third fresh cut grass! Gap Grass is amazing stuff-can't get enough!

Sawdust for me as well...my dad designed and built houses as far back as I can remember up until a couple of years ago. This was partly because of the market crashing in regards to real estate, but also due to the fact that he's getting "old" and needed to do something less strenuous on his body (he would often work on a house by himself and only hire one or two people in for certain parts of it). My dad is my hero. Well, him and Reepicheep from The Chronicles of Narnia.

Fresh cut grass. (Must check out the Gap spray mentioned above.) I live in the sticks, land of the non-lawn watering so I hardly ever catch a whiff. And new baby smell.
Happy weekend to you guys!

I think sense of smell may be my most favorite of the senses for the way it can connect you so powerfully to memories. Strong coffee, honeysuckle, autumn, and baby detergent do it for me.

The produce section at Whole Paycheck, specifically the fruit.... It used to be fresh-baked bread, but since I discovered that I have Celiac disease and can't eat gluten (wheat, most grains, most breads) and now the smell just makes me miss light, fluffy bread... Gluten-free bread just isn't the same... *sniffle*

the post office. my daddy was a mail carrier for 30+ years, and i used to run and give him a big hug and a monster sniff when he came home each day. he smelled just like the post office, and to this day every time i walk inside one i breathe in very, very deeply. :0) i don't know what it is...maybe a mix of paper and ink scent?

(unlike a lot of people, the post office is a happy place for me. :0) i can't stand being in line and hearing people complain, though.)

there's a certain rain smell when the cool rain hits the hot concrete in the summer...it's my all time favorite smell. it reminds me of childhood for some reason...it's rather mystical.

and the smell of woodsmoke when it's super cold outside and damp outside...another memory.

I don't believe I have ever commented before, but I had to with this set of letters....LOOOOVE them! I seriously let out an audible sigh. I know you've heard it many times over, but THANK YOU for sharing pieces of your life with us. :)

Gotta say - that MR340 sounds awesome! As someone who used to love canoeing and scout and church camps and even took a whitewater canoeing class at A&M (the greatness of a minor in outdoor education), I think I'd love doing something like that. I need to get over to White Rock in a kayak sometime and have fun.

I love the smell of cold as it clings to your clothes when you come in from outside

I somehow read past the favorite smell sentence. I would have to go with you Tim, the freshly-cut wood in Dads shop wins hands down.
