{MR340 Race Update!}

Sunday, May 29, 2011

A few months ago Em and I were interviewed by the Advocate Magazine along with some other Texas paddlers participating in the MR340. The publication was released on Thursday so feel free to check out their photos, as well as read the full article HERE.

On Friday Em and I had a great workout at the lake. We spent almost 3 hours battling tough headwinds, getting sunburned, and forming new blisters on our digits.

This week we dropped our kayak at a different place on the lake. This is me telling Em to make sure she brought her paddling mojo since it was going to be windy.

Even though our kayak is 21ft long it only weighs 46 lbs. I like to think that people watching us carry it believe we're related to The Incredible Hulk or are on a diet of spinach and raw eggs.

Once we pushed off Em set the pace at the bow while I tried to figure out how to navigate our yak in the strong wind and high waves. These pictures just don't do them justice, but then again, it doesn't take much to rock a yak that sits as low to the water as ours.

I've had to learn that steering a kayak is much different than a boat. Slight taps on the foot pedals are all it takes to turn us in the right direction.

Eventually the clouds burned off and Em and I got to enjoy the warmth of the sun. I was also reminded to ALWAYS wear sunscreen on the water, even when it's cloudy.

Finally our training was done and we made it back to the dock. Nothing like kicking off your weekend with sore traps, obliques, and calf muscles that make you want to stay in your biscuit all afternoon.

Tim Tam and I had these for breakfast this morning. This must mean we are officially on vacation! I'll be posting our weekly MR340 Race Update tomorrow instead of on Monday since we're leaving for Mexico. What are your Memorial Day plans?

{Fist Pump Friday!}

Friday, May 27, 2011

To kick off this week's photos we have college roommates Rachael and Danielle who threw fist pumps and leg kicks last weekend after graduating from Taylor university. Team Loerke and Jay Kesler say, "100 Ivanhoe shakes for you!"

Next meet Natalie's preschool grad, Ivan, who threw fist pumps and leg kicks in the tiniest cap & gown I've ever seen. Way to go little man! Kindergarten's gonna blow your mind.

Our next photo is of our sweet friend, Aleks, who threw fist pumps and leg kicks outside of Trim Castle in Ireland. Can you guess what movie was filmed here? Hint: "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our FREEDOOOOOOOM!"

Next meet Tarra, Kasia, Fredye, and Nelle who threw fist pumps and leg kicks at their Whole Food's 30 Day Detox class. Nutritionist Kasia has already helped these hot mama's lose 10 lbs! Pretty sure ya'll could give Wendy Peffercorn a run for her money.

Next meet Taylor grad, Lima, who celebrated a successful thesis defense, getting a job, and graduating with a masters degree. (Insert one big CONGRATS on the Broho bridge right here).

Remember last week's FPF challenge? Ask and you shall receive ... Meet some of K-West's Uncles and Leadership girls as they stuff their bocas with Kanakuk's famous koffee kake.

Both of the above photos were taken by full-time Kanakuk staff, Lindsay Rother, who will be fulfilling the role of Social Media Director at K-West this summer. If you get a chance be sure and check out Lindsay's blog!

To participate in FPF, send a picture of you and your friends throwing fist pumps and leg kicks to em{at}todaysletters{dot}com ... it's just that simple.

{Husband's Letters}

Friday, May 27, 2011

Husband's Letters: Dear Wing-woman, thank you for the much needed time away from writing so I could focus on finishing PA school. These past 3 years would have been impossible had it not been for the support, encouragement, sacrifice, and late night laughter you offered. Words cannot express how grateful I am for your love, grace, and perseverance. Dear Fun Things, you feel different now that I don't have a massive test or project looming over my head. Yesterday's test results reminded me that I shouldn't worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will take care of itself. Dear Tyroch, thank you for taking me to the Byron Nelson golf tournament yesterday. Good food, great talent, and beautiful weather was the perfect way to celebrate the passing of my boards. Dear Bride of 6 Years, next week we get some much needed time away. Can't wait to be still together and hold hands with you on the beach!

Happy Freakin Weekend, Homies! What or who are you proud of as of late?

Be sure and check back later for Fist Pump Friday photos!

{Today's Letters}

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Today's Letters: Dear Mr. Loerke PA-C, at 7:45 this morning we found out you passed your boards. Three words: IT. IS. FINISHED. Dear Results, waiting for you was like watching paint dry. You took F-O-R-E-V-E-R. Dear Mexico, even though it's supposed to rain every day next week we couldn't be more excited to be on vacation. Will arrive wearing wellies and a backpack full of books and DVD's. Dear Husband, these are some of my favorite pictures of you during PA school. I'll let you cast my arm or perform CPR on my anytime!

Beyond proud of you,

{Today's Letters}

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Today's Letters: Dear Husband, whenever I see you drinking coffee at our favorite breakfast spot it makes me feel old (in a good kind of way). I love this. Dear Twisted Root, you are the only burger I like to eat without stopping to breathe. Three fist pumps for you. Dear Mom, during last night's tornado you called to say you were hiding in the bathtub with your purse and a box of Russell Stovers chocolates. And some people wonder where I get my sweet tooth. Dear Timo Flay, to the man who has grilled me hundreds of steaks but still needs to hear "I believe in you" before he throws them on the grill, I love you.

Is there anything you think we should keep doing, stop doing, or start doing on the blog? I'd love to hear your ideas!

Also, be sure and check out our new FAQ button located at the bottom of our left sidebar. I'll be adding your good (and often entertaining) questions to it often.

{I Can't Make You Love Me by Bon Iver}

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

In case you missed Bon Iver's performance on Jimmy Fallon last night here you go. It was lovely to see Justin cover Bonnie Raitt's, "I Can't Make You Love Me". I remember listening to this song on my walkman before falling asleep when I was in the 6th grade. Her "Luck of the Draw" album changed my little 11 year old life forever. Enjoy.

{Today's Letters}

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Today's Letters: Dear Mr. Loerke, before meeting you I had never watched an episode of Swamp People, eaten Peanut Butter M&M's for dinner, or seen a grown man de-robe before going to the bathroom. You teach me so many new things. Dear Running Legs, sorry I neglected you for so long. I think you're finally back like a brand new invention. Dear Ball Jars, you are always one of my favorite flea market finds. Thanks for helping me daydream about this summer's canning adventures. Dear Husband, on Thursday you find out if you passed your boards. Know that regardless of the results I will still believe you can slay dragons and give Patch Adams a run for his money. Over and out.

What's your favorite show on TV right now? In the last 5 days I've watched 4 episodes of Swamp People. What is wrong with me?!

{MR340 Race Update!}

Monday, May 23, 2011

Yesterday Em and I spent the afternoon at White Rock Lake battling 15 mph winds and 2 ft waves. It was AWESOME.

Before getting on the water we mounted our new GoPro cameras which give us the capability to film HD video or take photos every 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds. (Insert more AWESOME right here).

After connected our bilge pump and checked our steering cables we were good to go.

Once we were on the water it wasn't long before the blue sky turned gray, our cockpits were soaked, and our GPS gave us an encouraging read of 3.2 mph. (Pretty sure Em and I can crawl faster than that after a Thanksgiving feast).

Nonetheless, we still had a blast and enjoyed the workout we received from the infamous headwind. (Which sometimes makes us want to junk punch it all the way to Antarctica).

Fundraising Update: Last week's donation from Mike & Jess now gives us a total of $9,800 raised for our race and the McKeaigg Family Adoption. This is AMAZING! Only $2,200 left to go. Donations of $100.00 will still get your company logo on our kayak and blog sidebar through the end of July.

{Letters from Josh Garrels}

Friday, May 20, 2011

I first heard of Josh Garrels almost 10 years ago when I was a senior in college. I remember Twinner mailing me a copy of Stone Tree saying, "this guy's gonna be big someday." I wish I could tell you how much Josh's music has impacted my life over the years. His voice is unlike anything I've ever heard and his lyrics are beyond powerful. (He's also Mr. Loerke's favorite musician). I hope you enjoy getting to know Josh and his beautiful family better. We could couple crush these guys ALL DAY LONG!

Dear Portland, I'm so glad we didn't break up with you. Although your long seasons of rain and grey skies made us threaten to leave you, I can truthfully say that the grass is not greener anywhere else. You're unique among cities, and we look forward to investing our time, prayers, and rent money into making this relationship work.

Dear Road, we still love the adventure and open horizon that you provide, but alas, I'm afraid we'll have to remain "just friends." I know we were planning on packing up our life and putting it all in storage, buying an F-250 diesel truck, and living out of an airstream camper while touring the country as a family ... but in the end it just wasn't meant to be. We'll still visit you often, but we can't abandon all for you. "If life is a highway, I (don't) want to drive it all night long." I pretty much want to go home and get some rest before my kids are up at 6am.

Dear "Love & War & the Sea In Between," what an exhilarating ride! Honestly, I didn't think we'd make it, for no album has ever pulled me so deep into the disorientation and darkness of the "artistic process" as you did. I thought I lost my way a few times, but so many people came alongside to help nurture you into maturity. Now you're all growed up and ready to brave the world on your own. You don't have anything to prove -- just be yourself!

Dear Mitchy, you're such an honorable and daring woman that I get to have as my friend and wife! I love that you're skeptical of the normal life while being a carrier of peace. You've inspired me to live into my destiny while holding my hand through the dark, prickly, and wounded places in my life. Only you could tame "the beast."

Dear Heron and Shepherd, you guys are rad, and not just because you share half of my DNA. You two are truly magnificent, funny, wild little creatures. What better way to disengage from the esoteric headspace of exploring symbols and concepts than to dance, laugh, and wrestle with you guys after a day of work (and then clean your poo and sweep up half your meal from the floor). You guys make life magic and meaningful in ways I never could have imagined.

BTW, Josh's new album, "Love & War & the Sea In Between," will be released on June 15th for FREE. Talk about Christmas coming early! You can also check out his other albums on iTunes HERE. Some of our favorite songs are SISU, Rabbit & the Bear, Words Remain, Fire By Night, Candlenight, Joyful Boy, and Father Along.

{Fist Pump Friday!}

Friday, May 20, 2011

To kick off this week's photos we have Ouachita Baptist seniors Mark, Madison, Katie, Lori, Pooh, Bethany, Kelly, and Alek. Three Loerke fist pumps for graduating, four leg kicks for submitting a photo with a liger.

Last Fall Tim and I started leading a Foundation Group of newly married couples. Meet Lauren and Robbie from our group who spent the weekend in Destin, FL. Rumor is it only took 15 attempts to get this photo. Way to go, Homies!

Our next photo is of my friend Steph and her sister, Renae. They threw fist pumps at Sister's Coffee in Denver, CO in honor of their oldest sister, Michelle. (Insert supportive and well loved family here).

Next meet Taylor University students Andrea and Kara who competed in the most "treacherous 10K" in Nashville, IN. Bonus points for going to Taylor and for not being afraid to get bloody and muddy!

Our next photo is of College of the Ozark students Brittany (senior) and Kristi (junior) who threw fist pumps in San Clemente, CA during their first surf lesson. Way to make John Florence proud.

Next meet my homie Em McKeaigg's 3 year old nephew, Thatcher, from Portland, OR. His mom Kobie creates modern baby books that make me drool. I also covet her husband Travis's ability to make homemade beer.

Our next photo is of Mr. Loerke's best friend from PA school, Tim, and his wife, Kristen. They threw fist pumps at graduation in honor of Tim's new job at Children's Medical Center in hematology/oncology. So proud of you both!

Next meet Kristen's 6 month old daughter Emery Rose from Cookeville, TN. Pretty sure she's one of the cutest 6 month old littles I've ever seen.

Lastly meet Kelsey and her husband Eric. They live in Des Moines, Iowa and threw fist pumps and leg kicks because today is their 1 year blogiversary. Congratulations!

This week's mission: Take a FPF photo of you and your Homies at camp. Bonus points if you're stuffing your boca with Kanakuk's famous koffee kake. (Of course all other entries will be accepted).

To participate in FPF, send a picture of you and your friends throwing fist pumps and leg kicks to em{at}todaysletters{dot}com ... it's just that simple.
