Today's Letters: Dear Mr. Loerke PA-C, your last PA blog post was one of my favorites yet. So encouraged by the way your medical journey has grown you over the past four years. Dear Ranch, there is a deep longing within for sunburned shoulders, an afternoon of fishing, and falling asleep on your back porch. {Soon, I hope}. Dear 6AM, each morning you greet me with a view of the ocean and a one-armed plastic Jesus that my dad found on the banks of the Missouri River when I was 10. This makes me smile. Dear Boobie Baskets, sometimes the best part of my day is coming home and taking you off. That's all. Dear Favorite Sidekick, out of 7.008 billion people in this world I met you. Can you believe it? #Blessed

What's the first thing you see when you wake up? Does it remind you of some place special?

Whole30 Day 17: Fruit Smoothie, Chili Lime Cashews, Banana Bread LÄRABAR, Spicy Kale Chips, Dehydrated Mango, Smoked Turkey, Brisket, Green Beans, Guacamole.
Whole30 Day 18: Banana Bread LÄRABAR, Jazz Apple, Justin's Almond Butter, Dehydrated Mango, Grilled Chicken with Green Beans Wrapped in Bacon Woobies, Banana Ice Cream.
Whole30 Day 19: Strawberries & Pineapple, Roasted Almonds, Grilled Chicken, Justin's Almond Butter, mas Pineapple, Salad.
Whole30 Day 20: Fruit Smoothie, Almonds, Jazz Apple, Justin's Almond Butter, Cherry Pie LÄRABAR, Pork Chops & Peaches (we used pears), Bacon Brussels Sprouts, fruit from Yummilicious.
Overview: A few things I've learned ... 1) If you're going to do the Whole30 you have to have access to a blender. I've used my Magic Bullet at least twice a day since I started this gig 2) Get your knives sharpened (your avos will thank you) 3) You'll spend more money on groceries but save money on eating out ... it all balances out in the end 4) Saturday afternoons will be spent prepping food for the week. Listening to a James Taylor LP can make this time much more enjoyable 5) Don't trade one addiction (Blue Bell) for a another addiction (Banana Ice Cream) even if it's healthier (I'm totally guilty of this!) 6) Eat to live, not live to eat 7) Buy spinach for your Breakfast Smoothies in the bulk lettuce bins. It will stay fresh longer and only cost 50¢ instead of $3 for a bag 8) Carry a toothbrush and toothpaste in your satchel. Gum is no bueno and your co-workers will thank you 9) Try new recipes (often) and 10) The Whole30 is not about weight loss. In fact, I've been intentional not to mention my weight out of a heart to honor our readers who may struggle with body image and / or eating issues. My prayer while documenting my Whole30 journey is that it wouldn't trigger any sort of unhealthy eating habits for my readers. Often I've had to remind myself that this cleanse is more about growing in discipline and establishing a healthier relationship with food than it is about physical transformation. A helpful book I've been reading is Every Body Matters by Gary Thomas. Be sure and check it out!

Totally agree on the boobie baskets. Some days that comes off before my shoes or even putting my purse down. Its like relaxation cannot begin until then. :)

Loved this post. First thing I see is a rock. Yep, rock. It is about two inches tall is shaped like a roughly carved heart. A few years ago, in the midst of one of my darkest times in my life, my bff and I were walking through the woods for some quality time, she saw this rock and picked it up and gave me "her heart." Such a silly-made-us-giggle moment. But I cherish that rock. I coated it in clear polish and every day it reminds me that I made it through that time, I am a better person for it and could not of made it without her. Thank God for sisters and best friends.

over and out. :)

The first thing I see is my 95lb Weimaraner's nose on my face--he thinks its his job to wake me up every day. I wake up, kiss his face, & get my coffee started.

Hi there,

I'm a long-time reader but first time commentor. I wanted to say thank you for being so intentional in your commenting on the Whole30 journey. I first heard about this through your website and was linked to the actual Whole30 website, and it definitely triggered a whole host of unhealthy eating disorder thoughts, feelings, etc. (I've struggled with an eating disorder for most of my life.) You've helped re-define what Whole30 is truly about and although I know it wouldn't be good for me to take part in it right now, I'm eager to try it out someday for all the reasons you mention. Thanks for being such an inspiration not only in this way, but in your relationship with Tim, with God, and your overall spirit. You guys rock and if my husband and I ever make it your way, I'd love to meet you someday!

When I wake up I see the mustard yellow tufted crushed velvet chair that sits beside my bed. It was one of a pair in my grandpa's house, and I was blessed to get it when I moved to my first college apt. I've lugged it around w/ me every move. It's hideous, but I adore it & wish we'd kept its mate. It still smells like his house, and he died in '86!

just for clarification...
One Armed Jesus was from the BLUE river as I recall.
In my opinion, the Blue gives up the best trash!

i get the pleasure of seeing 1 of 2 things when i awake in the morning...if i'm on my right side, i see a wall collage full of lovey-dovey and family photos. if i'm on my left side, i usually see old man HB's stinky wet nose (my basset who crawls into bed with me after my hubby heads off to work each morning :))
