{River Loerke} 8 Months

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Things River likes: laying on the fireplace, drinking people's water when they aren't looking, scratching paint off the back door, eating leaves, taking naps on benches, licking silverware in the dishwasher, walks at Cherokee Park, and pooping in the middle of the sidewalk.

Things River does not like: leashes, baby gates, riding in the car, bumblebees, crossing the street,  and sharing her bed with Ryder.

Happy 8 month Birthday, sweet River.
You. are. loved.

Our dog loves drinking people's water, too! Little bugger. A cute one, though. :)

River you look very loved. Glad to see you have a harness lead! Consider throwing away your prong collars. http://www.peta.org/about/faq/What-are-the-dangers-of-using-choke-and-prong-collars.aspx

Try this one, it works great: http://www.amazon.com/Premier-Harness-Large-Black-Silver/dp/B0009ZBKG4

Sister Layla in KC can't wait to meet River nose to nose. I show her pictures of River and we look at pictures on the phone and blog together. Layla loves to pee on the sidewalk to avoid getting on wet grass. Girl Dogs!

First, I love River - what a beautiful and sweet pup! Second, and I admit this is a bizarre questions, are River and Kola friends? :-)

papa, you're cute. so is sweet layla!

kate, sadly kola is not staying at the harvest house :( but i like to think river and kola would be buddies.

Your usage of prong collars also makes me super sad. There are far better ways of proper leash walking without using negative reinforcement - such as a Gentle Leader or a Freedom No-Pull harness.

You can try and get River more acclimated to her leash by placing it on her while she's in the house and attaching it to your belt loop or around your wrist, or let her drag it behind her, but make sure you keep an eye on her so she doesn't get it stuck on or around anything.. when she has the leash on, treat her and give her tons of praise. This way she'll make a positive connection to being leashed (WAIT.. I get treats AND a walk!).

There are always a million and one options outside of utilizing pressure, force, or fear to coerce your dog into doing something. Obviously raise your dog as you choose, it's your pet.

But you come off as someone who would prefer to do things in a positive way and not a negative way, and as a professional dog trainer, I utilize the Gentle Leader everyday and you would be surprised how much consistency and patience with it can turn your dog into a breeze to walk.

Just keep in mind - there are no bad dogs, just bad or lazy owners.

River is the most amazing pup! So thankful to know her & I love feeding her carrots, taking her on walks, rubbing her nose, & laughing at her quirks.
More than peanut butter chocolate milkshakes & fresh compost delivered on fridays.

So I'm confused. Who is Ryder then? And why is he in your pictures so much if he isn't your dog?

ktad, ryder is our friend molly's dog. we do communal living so ryder and river live in the harvest house together!
