{Harvest House Feastgiving!}

Saturday, November 30, 2013

It's official: our first Harvest House Feastgiving was a success!
We cooked in the kitchen from 9am-6pm, pre-gamed with Tim's smoked Pig shots,
ate our weight in Spiced Pumpkin Layer Cake, shared a Pisgah Pale Ale growler all the way from NC, and laughed until we cried with Rashad & Jamia.
This of course meant the next day we slept in, ate cake and turkey for breakfast,
and cut down our first Christmas tree. But more on that tomorrow ...
Happy Saturday, brave ones!

{Happy Thanksgiving, Brave Ones!}

Thursday, November 28, 2013

We're counting on River to exercise more self-control than we do when it comes to food today.
Tim's cooking a smoked turkey, frying a turkey, and baking his famous pumpkin cheesecake.
I'm attempting my great-grandma's dressing, sweet potato casserole, smashed potatoes,
green beanie casserole, corn pudding, and rolls.
Bring on the afternoon naps, eggnog, and food comas!
Can't wait to have our first Harvest House Feastgiving with sweet friends.
What are you most looking forward to doing today?

{Gratitude} Lately

Friday, November 22, 2013

Lately I've been thankful for Louisville's charm and the city I call home.

For roasted tomato soup with homemade croutons.

For socks that stay on and fascination with the simple things.

For familiar mugs on our harvest table and $2 bottles of maple syrup.

For urban farm life and the way our animals make us laugh.

For this part of my daily walk and the humbling conversations we have.

For homemade salsa verde with our homegrown tomatoes and chilies from our neighbors garden.
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
What have you been thankful for lately?

{Husband's Letters}

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Dear Mrs. Loerke, each week I wake you up to tell you what size fruit our little is. Last night s/he graduated to the size of a turnip! Never before have I ever thought a root vegetable could be so interesting. Dear Amish Stove, you were a cheap solution to a fireplace that was recently deemed ornamental by our inspector. I fully expect to find Em sleeping on the floor next to you each night until Easter. Dear Aunties, as much as I will miss the women in my life this weekend I'm thankful Em and River can get sister time with you all in Asheville. It blesses me to know they will both return well-loved, well-fed, and with dirt on their paws. Dear Em, last weekend you winterized our beehive without wearing gloves while I had to dress like this just to suck up the leaves in our backyard. I'm afraid you will always be more brave than me when it comes to insects.

Tim

Happy {almost} weekend! As we process converting our downstairs fireplace would you recommend going with a wood burning stove or gas?

Dear Mr. Loerke, after running errands yesterday I came home and found you doing this. Then I closed my eyes and thanked baby Jesus for allowing me to marry a Griswold. Dear Pumpkin, Sweet Potatoes & Squash, you were grown by two of the most beautiful souls we know. Thank you for being a sweet reminder that soil is the most sincere connector of lives.  Dear Christmas Cards, after 8 years of marriage I finally got my shiz together and made our first family Christmas card. This compelled Tim to ride his invisible sleigh around the living room and sing, "Fra ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra." Dear Timothy James, last night you dreamt we had a baby girl who talked in full sentences at 5 months and was the color red. Last week I dreamt we had a baby boy born at 32 weeks whom I accidentally forgot at daycare because he was so small. This parenting thing is already AWESOME.

Happy Wednesday, brave ones! When do y'all typically buy / set-up your Christmas tree? If it were up to Tim he would have ours already cut and decorated!

This babe is already so well loved!
Sheesh.

Dear Mr. Loerke, during the tornado warning last night you told me to go to the basement, take cover in River's crate, and grab the leftover box of Nord's donuts off the table. {Because if I'm gonna die I might as well croak in a cage with glazed icing all over my face, right?}. Dear Baby Bump, you're making it difficult to do things like sleep on my belly and button my jeans. Good thing our pup could care less about me walking around with my pants unzipped. Dear This American Life, I finally started listening to your broadcast which first aired on NPR in 1995. Pretty sure I'll be retired in Florida and carrying an oxygen tank by the time I'm caught up on all of your episodes. Dear Timothy James, in honor of my favorite holiday, what do you get when you cross a turkey with an octopus? Enough drumsticks for Thanksgiving!

Happy Monday, brave ones! What are you most looking forward to this Thanksgiving? Sadly, this will be our first Thanksgiving away from Tulsa in almost 10 years. Ames, we're counting on you to lead the Founder's Chorus at Utica Square!

{Today's Letters}

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Dear Timothy James, lately you've been thumbing through our chicken book shopping for spring chicks. I love that you love chickens as much as I love bees. Dear Little, so far your growth has caused me to A) purchase new boobie baskets B) eat an entire jar of olives on the way home from the store C) vacuum the basement or D) all of the above. Pregnant women should come with a warning label. Dear Hannah & Jesse, blogging has allowed us to meet and make many lifelong friends. Looking forward to hosting you at Harvest House B&B this weekend! Dear Mr. Loerke (who always gets two letters), you just took laundry and parenting to a whole new level of sexy. The end.

Did you have any cravings during pregnancy? I've been living off of pickles, eggs & San Pellegrino!

{River Loerke} 14 Months

Things River likes : Running at the Baily's farm, eating leaves, waiting for the mailman at the front door, morning wrestles with Rowan, watching Moll's drink her coffee, Fall in Louisville, and eating Rowan's socks.
Things River doesn't like : Raccoons, going to bed, our rooster Scofield, crickets in the basement, and the blow dryer at Feeders after her bath.

{Other things River likes / dislikes : 2 mos, 8 mos, 9 mos, 10 mos, 11 mos & 12 mos}

{Today's Letters}

Friday, November 08, 2013

Dear Timothy James, last night we tried letting River sleep in our room for the first time. Aside from her getting up every hour to sniff and lick everything and having to put her back in her crate at 3am I'd say it was a success. Dear Atlantic No. 5, your hummus and pita sandwich was worth the $15 parking ticket. {Insert new favorite lunch spot here}. Dear Scofield, four points for living up to your name by escaping the coop each night to keep watch over your ladies. Next thing we know you'll be working with Mahone & Gretchen to bring down the raccoon that ate Mailbox and McButter. Dear Mr. Loerke, today you picked up an extra shift to buy a crib. Reason #872 why you're going to be an amazing dad.

Happy freaking weekend, brave ones! Have any of you watched Prison Break before? We're almost done with Season 4 and don't want it to end!

{Gratitude} Lately

Lately I've been thankful for homegrown carrots wrapped in dirt woobies and flannels from college.

For warm pumpkin cider donuts and gourds out the yang.

For 10am, 11am, and 1pm naps. {Don't judge}

For this curly haired boy who asked me to marry him 9 years ago this month.

For time with family and furry house guests that sleep under foot.

For a stocked creek and getting outfished by my best friend.

For hand-knit baby beanies and littles in Patagonia onsies.

For homegrown jalapenos and the cream cheese and bacon that makes them amazeballs.

And for lunch at new places and studying that pays off on exam day.
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
