{Coughasaurus Rex Tea}

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Anyone else out there been a Coughasaurus Rex these days?
Here's my favorite way to combat a sore throat.

Hot water
Ginger Root
Fresh Lemon
Honey from our bees

1. Squeeze the juice from one thick slice of lemon, two slices of ginger root {skin still on}, and a tablespoon of honey into your favorite mug.
2. Add boiling water and stir until honey has disolved.
3. Drink, listen to Ben Howard, and watch the mountain of Kleenex grow on your couch. At least you'll be able to breath better.

{The Power of Wombmates}

I love my wombmate. After watching this commercial it made me appreciate her even more.
So grateful for you, bubby!

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

Dear Timothy James, this weekend you shoveled our walkway, picked up Kleenex for me at midnight, and washed all of our dishes while our pipes were frozen. Thank you for your selflessly serving me! Dear Oven-Cooked Bacon, holy deliciousness, Batman! I thought the only way to cook you to perfection was in a cast iron skillet. Consider me a converted woman. Dear PollenArts, harvesting our own honey was rewarding, but seeing our wax turned into candles is simply AMAZEBALLS. Thank you for helping make our beekeeping adventure come full circle. Dear Mr. Loerke, every day before you leave for work you put your hands on my belly and say, "Be good to your mama today." This always makes me smile.

Happy Tuesday, brave ones! Keeping bees was on my bucket list for a long time. I'm so thankful we had such a successful hive last year! What's one new thing you'd like to try in 2014?

{Husband's Letters}

Monday, January 27, 2014

Dear Emma, you don't drink coffee often but when you do I can almost guarantee I'll find it in the microwave the next day. I've grown to love this about you. Dear NPR, you recently taught me that hard-boiled eggs can be peeled easier if I add a teaspoon of baking soda to my water. I also learned about this special trick that lets me shoot an egg out of it's shell like a rocket, but I'm still perfecting that one. Dear Harvest House, in the past month you have taught me about frozen water pipes, insulation for a drafty basement, and creaky floor boards with sneaky nails that like to snag our wool socks. Thanks for growing me as a home owner. Dear Sweet Wife of Mine, you are so cutie when I see you walking around the house in your jammers at 11pm trying to beat everyone in our daily step competition on Argus.You've reminded me never to underestimate a determined pregnant woman.

Happy Monday, brave ones! Do you know someone who is pregnant? Have you told them lately how beautiful they are? I know Em never gets tired of hearing me tell her.

{Gratitude} Lately

Saturday, January 25, 2014

Lately I've been thankful for salted sidewalks and sunshine on 17° days.

For a 6 month baby bump and the inventor of Spandex.

For new window benches and transplanted succulents.

For a night with the girls and dance parties until 2am.

For homemade tortilla soup and day trips with Kate.

For overalls that don't button and old creaky pine floors.

For KY sunsets and the reminder that Spring is just around the corner.

And for fresh snap beans and the bacon grease that makes them taste amazing.
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
Happy Saturday, brave ones!
What have you been thankful for lately?

{Today's Letters}

Thursday, January 23, 2014

Dear Timothy James, every Wednesday you do this and it blesses me. Forgive me for not telling you enough! Dear River, thank you for reminding me to never put my happiness in anything I may lose {or that you may eat}. Love you more than the fly fishing boots and entryway rugs you eat for breakfast. Dear Quills, your blackberry chocolate chip muffins make me eat the crumbs off the wrappers they come in . They're just. that. good. Dear Mr. Loerke {who always gets two letters}, before we met I had never made snow by throwing water into the air in sub-freezing temperatures or watched an episode of Alaska: The Last Frontier. I like the things you teach me.

Happy Thursday, brave ones! What's the worst thing your pet has ever eaten?

{Today's Letters}

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Dear Timothy James, yesterday we had snow day #367. Thank you for letting me sleep in while you fed the chickens and made brekky. Dear Dallas Girls, seeing pictures of all of your babies makes the 14 hour drive to Dallas next month seem more than worth it. So many new paws to squeeze and cheeks to kiss! Dear Fears, you continue to teach me many things, mostly how to grow in bravery through reflection. Thank you for inspiring me to do one courageous thing each day. Dear Mr. Loerke, to the man who likes to rock Bean Boots with his scrubs, you are adorable and I love you. Over and out.

Happy Wednesday, brave ones! What's one courageous thing you've done lately?

{Patagonia Just Got Even Better}

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

When I started fly fishing 2 years ago Patagonia didn't make waders for women. Now they do!
Get me a pair of these and a fly fishing lesson with April Vokey and I. might. just. cry.

{Happy Martin Luther King Day!}

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

For those of you who have been following our blog for awhile know that yesterday was

For the past five years we've celebrated Martin Luther King day with friends by cooking his favorite meal {fried chicken, sweet potato casserole, macaroni & cheese, green beans, pecan pie} and watching a movie or documentary about his efforts to end racial segregation.
If you haven't seen The Butler or 12 Years As A Slave we highly recommend them both!

Happy Tuesday, brave ones! We hope your MLK day was memorable and inspiring.

{River Loerke} 16 Months

Monday, January 20, 2014

Things River Likes: eating entryway rugs for breakfast, hiding in the corner when the mixer is on, sitting on benches at Cherokee Park, and walks in the snow for beignets.
Things River doesn't like: frozen water fountains, waiting past 6am to go to the bathroom,
and feeling remorseful.
Happy Monday, brave ones!
{but more on that tomorrow}

Lions, Tigers, & Bears! {Well, Almost}

Saturday, January 18, 2014

Thanks to the people at the Wildlife In Need Animal Rescue, Molls and  I were able to
cross another adventure off of our bucket list Thursday night!
We got to hold 15 week old baby tigers who drank from bottles, growled when they were picked up, and liked to leave bitemarks on our arms & arses.
The sweet joey we held interacted well with the tigers but preferred to be hanging on the wall in her marsupial bag. Do you blame her? She was the sweetest!
Happy Saturday, brave ones!
What's one of thing you'd like to cross off your bucket list this year?

{Today's Letters}

Friday, January 17, 2014

Dear Timothy James, this morning I noticed you brushed the snow and ice off of my car before my 7am coffee date. Your attention to details blesses me! Dear Bucket List, yesterday you were shortened after getting a chance to hold a baby tiger and baby kangaroo. I like waking up feeling like Siegfried & Roy. Dear Toast on Market, your bacon & egg sandwich is one of the best things I've ever eaten. Four points for making me fall more in love with gorgonzola and soft boiled eggs. Dear Husband, based on this picture taken from our walk on Tuesday I'd say you and River need to start eating more kilowatts {or bacon & egg sandwiches} for breakfast. Over and out.

Happy Friday, brave ones! What are you most looking forward to this weekend?

{Today's Letters}

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

Dear Timothy James, it only took me three days but I finally found our traveling journal. Your words and hiding place were sweeter than hearing James Taylor being played on my mom's '62 Gibson. Dear Jack Bauer, there's nothing like waiting 4 years for you to raise from the dead like Lazarus. Counting down the days until May when you and Chloe O'Brien take back CTU! Dear Cardamom Waffles, I normally don't make waffles for one but you were completely worth it. Thank you for reminding me the importance of cooking and eating food that brings me joy. Dear Mr. Loerke, yesterday I saw this while looking for old bricks in an alleyway. I knew you'd appreciate. Over and out.

Happy Tuesday, brave ones! Waffles or pancakes?

{Today's Letters}

Monday, January 13, 2014

Dear Timothy James, there are three things I know I don't deserve - eternal life, our Dyson vacuum, and a Tempurpedic biscuit. Thank you for fulfilling my 6 month pregnant dreams. Dear Cinnamon Toast Crunch, you always give the best party favors. Reason #837 why you will forever be my favorite cereal. Dear Taco Luchador, your elote callejero and baja fish tacos had me throwing fist pumps while I bathed in queso fresco and picked cilantro out of my teeth. Congrats on being my favorite new taqueria in Louisville. Dear Husband, after reading this book two years ago you finally got to see the movie with one of your dudes last night. Thankful for the gift of delayed gratification and for the men who know you.

Happy Monday, brave ones! Favorite cereal? Go.

{Gratitude} Lately

Wednesday, January 08, 2014

Lately I've been thankful for friends who remind me to look up when walking.

For fingerless mittens and belly laughs.

For cuties for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

For pocket notes and the wisdom of Wendell Berry.

For snow days and breakfast in bed.

For sick babes who fall asleep on my shoulder.

For coffee table forts and wool blankets when our pipes freeze.

And for gentle baristas who whisper after 7am on the last day of the year.
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
What have you been thankful for lately?
Happy Tuesday, brave ones!

Sunday, January 05, 2014

Dear Timothy James, yesterday you took River on a 4.5 mile run, gave her a bath, and made her smell like fabric softener. This blessed me. Dear Argus App, you've provided more entertainment between friends in 5 days than Amanda Bynes twitter feed. Thanks for helping hold us accountable with food & exercise in the new year. Dear Harry Potter, until last night I had never read your books or seen any of your movies. Thanks to you I will be asking for Quidditch Balls, an Invisibility Cloak, and a Nimbus 2000 for my birthday this year. Dear Husband, (who always gets two letters), watching you with sick babes is almost as good as a clean pup, 18,283 steps, and movies that remind me the importance of bravery and friendship. #almost

Happy Sunday, brave ones! What Harry Pottery movie is your favorite? I've heard the 4th one is amazeballs.

{GO Month}

Friday, January 03, 2014

January is officially the Loerke GO (get organized) Month. We're firm believers in clearing things out that don't matter so we can make room for things that do. Here's a good rule of thumb to remember as you decided what to keep, toss, and give away: try and only hang onto things that A) you need B) you use and C) bring you joy. If they don't do these three things then they're probably just contributing to clutter.

One simple thing I try and do in January is to unsubscribe to all of my junk emails. I promise, you'll feel 15 pounds lighter and you won't even have to run around the block. If you're looking for a little bigger project we'd encourage you to consider making the paperless transition and sign up for Evernote. It's free and will change. your. life. We've been fans of Evernote for a long time and haven't needed a filing cabinet in over three years. It's glorious.

We'd love to know any organizational tips you have to help us become better organized this month.  Currently we're still working on tackling our basement. Praise the Great Lion of Judah for shelving and clear storage bins!

Happy Friday, brave ones. You are loved!
