{Today's Letters} Welcome Brave Richmond Loerke!

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

{Born April 25th at 9:14am : 7lbs 5oz : 19" long}

Dear Timothy James, after 29 hours of labor we finally got to meet our sweet little girl. I'm so proud of you for helping deliver Brave and for making all of us laugh when you announced we were having a boy. Silly umbilical cord. Dear Brave Richmond Loerke, each morning whenever I hear our rooster crow I say to myself, "We made it." Thanks for reminding me to take each day one day at a time. It's one of the many gifts your tiny self has given me so far. Dear Self, you are a mama! Something you weren't sure you'd ever get to experience. #bestadventureyet Dear Mr. Loerke, the past few days you've celebrated each successful latch, every ounce of expressed milk, and my first poop as if I had summited Mt. Everest. Your support has been better than a DD nursing bra filled with extra breast pads for my super soakers.

Thank you all for your love and support these past few days! To say we've been overwhelmed and greatly encouraged by your prayers, comments, and packages would be an understatement.
We. Are. Truly. Blessed.

Dear Mr. Loerke, this weekend I learned you like to ride a tiller like a tricycle. Reason #284 why boy roommates are AWESOME. Dear Old Bricks, finding you in the alleyways of our neighborhood was like hunting for Easter eggs. Even though you didn't taste like chocolate, free landscaping is sweet. Dear Mike, last week you greeted Rowan, River and I outside of Quills, and based on how you were dressed I thought you were homeless. Turns out we are neighbors, both have yellow labs, and like to grow black cherry tomatoes and eat purple basil. Thanks for humbly reminding me at age 33 to not judge people based on their appearance. Dear Timothy James, Goonies has been my favorite movie since I fell in love with my first Cyndi Lauper cassette and was old enough to live off of Fruit Roll-ups and episodes of The Cosby Show. When you told me they were making a sequel I almost died. Scratch that. Goonies never say die.

First cassette tape? Don't know what one is? Watch THIS. It will make you feel OLD. Happy Wednesday, brave ones!

{Happy Earth Day!}

"The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed." -Ghandi
Happy Earth Day, Homies. Because nothing says Happy Earth Day like cake.

PS, to make just buy a box of yellow cake mix and use food coloring to make 3/4 batter blue and 1/4 green. Pour the blue batter on the bottom of a greased cake pan and add the green on top. Once the cake has completely cooled, slice off the top layer using a serrated knife and voila! Earth cake.

Remember the girls fly fishing trip I took to North Carolina last August with Bek & Molls?
I was 2 weeks pregnant and didn't know it yet! Here's a video of our time together on the Davidson River.
Happy Monday, brave ones!

It's hard to believe our blog turns 4 years old today!
I remember thinking blogs were these weird online diaries that no one but your
mom and old friends from high school creeped in on from time to time.
I couldn't have been more wrong!
The friends and community our blog has allowed us to make have been life changing.
Thank you for supporting Tim, River, and I {and soon to be babe!} over the years.
You've watched us grow, struggle, move across the country, buy our first home
raise chickens and bees, travel, and strive to live simple and grateful lives.
We couldn't be more blessed by you all!
Happy weekend, brave ones.

Dear Timothy James, last night I found our newest pullets sleeping in piles inside the coop. Let the wild clucker games begin! Dear 16 Yr Old Grocery Store Bagger, yesterday you said to me, "No pregnant lady should have to carry anything except her baby." Then you escorted me and my one bag of bananas out to my car. Thanks for restoring my hope in humanity. Dear Saving Mr. Banks, seeing you took me back to sitting on the floor with Twinner while watching Marry Poppins and eating stale Goldfish out of china teacups. Fist pumps for being practically perfect in every way. Dear Mr. Loerke, after spending most of Friday getting our seeds in the ground, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for lots of grilled corn this summer and pumpkin everything this fall. You in?

Happy Sunday! One of my first jobs in high school was bagging groceries at our local super market. I loved it and hated it all at the same time! What was one of your first jobs growing up?

{Gratitude} Lately

Wednesday, April 09, 2014

Lately I've been thankful for baby kicks and a giddy Papa.

For handmade gifts made out of corduroy.

 For the reminder to be both of these things.

For a community of women who love bacon as much as they do celebrating others.

And for talented and thoughtful internet friends who I adore and have yet to meet.
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
Happy Wednesday, brave ones!
What have you been thankful for lately?

{Husband's Letters}

Saturday, April 05, 2014

Dear Mrs. Loerke, you're creativity has always impressed me. Thank you for showing me that another man's trash can often be turned into something unique and amazing. I love our new bicycle taxidermy! Dear Leaks in Our Basement Wall, so far I've patched you with wads of tinfoil and silicone caulk. Next plan of attack: Big League Chew and a roll of Duct tape. Dear Steve, owner of Fresh Start, a few days ago Patrick helped my wife shovel two loads of dirt into our raised beds instead of just dumping it into the middle of our driveway like most delivery guys would. From one man to another, give that dude a raise! Dear Emily Anne, sometimes I forget that you're pregnant because of how productive you've been and how little you've complained. Your perseverance reminds me everyday how truly blessed I am to be your husband.

Happy Saturday! Moms and dads, I'm searching high and low for any delivery room advice you can offer me as a first time Papa! (I'll also take any advice on how to repair leaky basement walls).

{The Greatest Catch}

Thursday, April 03, 2014

{All photos by the amazing Vanessa Jergensen}
On a rock he stood
Looking for the greatest catch
In the river she waited
Hoping for a sparring match

Over ripples he knew
He had been caught
Under skies of blue
Reeling in that which fought

Through bruised palms and tight lines
Bending like a reed
In front of an audience
That gathered along the stream.

On a rock she stood
Pulling in her biggest trout
In the River he waited
Securely netting it to not jump out

Held tightly she did
To the opponent that had lost
Letting go of that which hid
Bravely beneath the rocks.

So proud of you, Molls for landing your biggest fish!
{Durango, CO : Animas River : 25" Rainbow Trout : 11lbs : 19" girth : 3wt rod, 4x leader}
And a special thanks to Ness & DJ for being two of the most selfless people I know.
You. both. are. amazing.
Happy Thursday, brave ones!
Your weekend is almost here.
