I love road trips.

{Gratitude} Lately

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Lately I've been thankful for my favorite muffins wrapped in brown paper woobies.

For pups who squeeze through fences only to sit on the front porch.

For sweet conversations at Gralehaus with my dear friend Margaret.

And for homemade jam served with gifted spoons {Thanks Twinner!}
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
Happy Tuesday, brave ones!
What have you been thankful for lately?
PS- Today we begin our 11 hour road trip to Tulsa, followed by another 5 hour drive to Dallas.
It's been way too long since we've been back to visit and we have lots of necks to squeeze!
Can't wait.

Dear Mr. Loerke, last night when I shot out of bed at 3am with a leg cramp I was in so much pain I bit our curtains to keep from yelling the f-dash-dash-dash word. Thanks for being sweet and for making me laugh when I felt RIDICULOUS. Dear Seedlings, currently you are staying warm under a grow light in our second floor guest room. From the street it looks like the Harvest House be growin some wacky tabacky. Dear River, please don't eat our new rug. I promise it doesn't taste as good as your rawhide chews or deer antlers. Dear Timothy James, yesterday when I was working on the third floor you complimented me on my muscular arms. Then you said I had great veins but should never do heroin. Reason #283 why boy roommates are awesome.

Happy Friday, brave ones! What are you most looking forward to this weekend?

{Unbroken Movie Trailer}

Remember when Tim read this book two years ago?
After seeing the trailer I'm thankful I still have time to read it before seeing the movie!

Dear Mr. Loerke, last weekend you were relentless in getting this awesome find at a decent price so we could use it as a changing table in the nursery. Thanks for a) stewarding our finances well and b) for loving to repurpose old things as much as I do. Dear Taxes, you took 3.5 hours, a cookie the size of my head, and three phone calls to customer support agents to complete. PRAISE THE GREAT LION OF JUDAH you're done. Dear The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, you were one of the best movies I've ever seen. Thanks for your inspirational soundrack and for the reminder that the most beautiful things in life don't need attention. Dear Timothy James, to the man who bought me Yaktrax for my Bean boots so I don't slip on the ice and crush our baby. Your thoughtfulness humbles me.

Happy Monday, brave ones! Hope you weekend was wonderful! Seen any good movies lately??

{Happy Valentine's Day!}

Friday, February 14, 2014

Every year we receive emails from readers asking about our plans for Valentine's Day. Would you be disappointed if we told you that we're pretty Switzerland about it? As much as we appreciate having a national holiday dedicated to celebrating those you love, we feel like this is something we should be doing every day, not just once a year. That said, we still try and find simple ways to make this day special.

Last night we celebrated a little early since Tim has to work this evening. One of his favorite things to do is cook, so cook a feast he did! We stuffed our bellies with braised beef with red onion gremolata and parmesan roasted potatoes. Sheesh. I felt spoiled. Over dinner we talked about the ways we want to parent our little both similarly & differently from the way we were raised. We both were really encouraged!

Every year I'm in charge of Valentine's Day dessert, which means I typically try and bake something from scratch. But this year being 7 months pregnant I decided to go with a half gallon of our new favorite Blue Bell ice cream and trust in the old adage that anything purchased within five miles of home can be considered homemade. Btw, have you tried this new flavor yet? Oh myyyyyy it's good.

As far as gifts, I gave Tim a bottle of his favorite cologne and he surprised me with the coffee can I found at a flea market over a year ago that inspired me to name our first home the Harvest House.
We both felt so known and loved!

How do you plan on celebrating Valentine's Day? Do you have any favorite traditions? Whatever you do, we hope today is spent with those who celebrate and love all parts of you.
Happy Friday, brave ones!

{Rough Draft Farmstead} Road Trip

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Last weekend we drove down to Gamalie, KY to visit our sweet friends Hannah & Jesse.
Highlights included:
No cell service, electricity, or running water for 24 hours.
Eating homemade rabbit stew for dinner.
Bottle feeding three little piglets named Trousers, Gomer, and Boris.
Drinking warm maple sap tapped from their maple trees.
Waking up to seven roosters at 4am.
Watching the snow fall from a hole in the outhouse wall.
Eating sweet potato kale hash with bantam eggs for brekky.
Touring their 7 acre homestead and learning more about organic farming.
Stopping in Nashville for coffee, ice cream, burgers, tacos and more ice cream.
I couldn't have asked for a better road trip.
Happy Thursday, brave ones!

Dear Timothy James, recently you started writing our date nights on our basement wall to remind us to keep intentionally pursuing one another. Know that your heart has been a game changer for me whenever I carry up loads of clean laundry to fold. Dear Daily Reads, thank you for giving me a reason to crawl into the biscuit early and fall in love with my reading lamp again. You both have been great company this week. Dear Shirley Temple, our 6yr old selves will miss tap dancing with you and Mr. Bojangles in the living room. Tonight calls for a special trip to the store for Sprite, Ginger Ale, and grenadine. Dear Mr. Loerke, your joke from last night: Why can't cannibals eat clowns? Because they taste funny. Reason #282 why boy roommates are the shiz.

Happy Tuesday, brave ones! What good books have you been reading lately?

Dear Timothy James, this weekend you bought your first snow shovel-- a right of passage for a man who sings into it like a microphone as he salts the front steps. Dear Sweet Babe, you've gotten so big that my belly now rests on my thighs when I pee. I think being 7 months pregnant is AMAZEBALLS. Dear Gralehaus, yesterday we threw fist pumps after walking down the street for your homemade biscuits with sorghum apple jam, Intelligentsia coffee, haus made granola, and ham & egg crepes. Thanks for giving us another reason to love living in the Highlands. Dear Mr. Loerke, tonight you're taking off work to attend a parenting class for new dad's. Yep, I'm definitely the luckiest woman alive.

Happy Monday, brave ones! What was the best part of your weekend? I got to visit my friends Hannah & Jesse down at their farm in Bugtussle, KY. In addition to eating my way through Nashville, getting the Prius stuck in the snow, and bottle feeding baby piglets, I'd say it was a magical road trip. More pics coming soon!

{Twinner Trout} Otter Creek

Thursday, February 06, 2014

Last Saturday we got up early to fish at Otter Creek.
This time we caught hogs!
The best part was catching trout at the same time as Tim & Molls.
I had only done this a couple of times before.
{Once in New Mexico with Tim and once in North Carolina with Bek}.
Nothing quite beats catching twinner trout with those who know and love you best!
Congrats to Molls for landing the biggest fish - a 20" rainbow caught while eating a granola bar. #typical

Lately I've been thankful for overalls and carrying those you love like a suitcase.

For dear friends who turn rugs eaten by our pup into beautiful things.

For homemade Tartine bread and French toast.

For Narnia outside my bedroom window.

For birthday breakFEASTS on snowy mornings.

For chai tea and Americano's before sunrise.
Here's to gratitude and how it turns everything into enough.
Happy Wednesday, brave ones.
What have you been thankful for lately?

Dear Timothy James, yesterday you taught me the Spanish word for "crib" is cuna. Your excitement for this little life growing inside of me is contagious! {Just like my cold. #sorry} Dear February, this morning we woke up to more snow. Thank you for another reason to get outside and reconnect with our 9 year old selves. Dear Uterus, you're officially the size of a basketball. The positive side to this is that I can no longer see my swollen feet. Dear Mr. Loerke, last week you ordered me two new Ameraucana chickens for spring. Thank you for knowing me and how much I like blue eggs!

Happy Monday, brave ones! What's your favorite snow day activity? Walk with me.
